Unit 1: Grammar: The Past Simple Tense
1. Form (الماضي البسيط)
Use the Past Simple for finished past actions.
- Regular verbs: add -ed → work → worked
- Verbs ending in -e: add -d → live → lived
- Consonant + y: change y to -ied → study → studied
- Vowel + y: add -ed → play → played
- Some short CVC verbs: double the final consonant → stop → stopped
- Irregular verbs: learn their past forms → go → went; eat → ate
- Negative: subject + didn't + base verb → She didn't go.
- Question: Did + subject + base verb? → Did she go?
- Short answers: Yes, she did. / No, she didn't.
- Verb be: was/were → He was tired. They weren't tired. Was he tired?
2. Uses
- Completed past actions: She visited Paris in 2020.
- A series of past actions: He woke up, had breakfast, and left.
- Past habits: When I was young, I walked to school every day.
3. Time Expressions
yesterday, yesterday morning, last night, last week, last year, two days ago, in 2010, when I was a child.
