Unit 6: Grammar: Passive Voice (المبني للمجهول)

The Passive Voice is used when the action or the object is more important than the person doing it. It is very common in news reports, formal writing, and scientific facts.

Active Voice

Focuses on WHO did the action. *"The chef prepared the meal."*

Passive Voice

Focuses on WHAT happened. *"The meal was prepared (by the chef)."*

The Basic Formula (القاعدة الأساسية)

New Subject (Object) Verb "To Be" (Same Tense) Past Participle (V3)

Common Tenses (A2-B1)

Present Simple am / is / are + V3 "Many cars are made in Japan." تُصنع العديد من السيارات في اليابان. Past Simple was / were + V3 "The window was broken yesterday." كُسر النافذة بالأمس. Future Simple will be + V3 "The results will be announced soon." سيتم إعلان النتائج قريباً. Modal Verbs can/must + be + V3 "This door must be locked at night." يجب قفل هذا الباب ليلاً.

How to Transform a Sentence

1 Identify the Object of the active sentence and move it to the start.
2 Check the Tense of the active verb and use the correct form of "To Be".
3 Change the main verb into the Past Participle (V3).
4 (Optional) Add the Agent using "by" if you need to say who did it.

Exam Success Tip

In the National Exam, if a rewrite exercise starts with the Object of the original sentence, it is a Passive Voice task. Always double-check your V3 (Past Participle) ! Common irregulars like *Write → Written* , *Speak → Spoken* , and *Give → Given* appear frequently.
