Unit 8: Grammar: Zero & First Conditionals (الشروط: النوع صفر والأول)

Conditionals (If-clauses) describe the result of a specific condition. Zero is used for facts that never change, while First is used for possible future events.

Zero Conditional

Scientific facts & general truths. *"If you heat ice, it melts."*

First Conditional

Real possibilities in the future. *"If it rains, I will stay home."*

Zero Conditional: Always True (الشرط النوع صفر: الحقائق)

Scientific Fact

"If you freeze water, it becomes ice."

Personal Habit

"If I drink coffee at night, I don't sleep."

First Conditional: Future Possibility (الشرط النوع الأول: الاحتمالات)

`If + Present Simple , ... Will + Verb (base)`

Prediction

"If she invites me, I will go to the party."

Warning / Threat

"If you don't hurry, you will miss the bus."

B1 Expansion: The "Unless" Rule

Unless means "If... not" . It is followed by an affirmative verb but has a negative meaning. Standard If "I'll go if it doesn't rain." Using Unless "I'll go unless it rains ."

National Exam Key

Two important rules for the exam: 1. The Comma: If the "If" part comes first, use a comma. If "If" is in the middle, no comma is needed. 2. No "Will" in the If-clause: Never put "will" immediately after "if". Wrong: "If I *will* study..." Correct: "If I study , I will pass."
