Unit 1: Reading Skill: Skimming and Scanning
Skimming (القراءة السريعة / التصفح)
Skimming means reading quickly to grasp the
main idea
of a text without focusing on details.
(القراءة بسرعة لاستيعاب الفكرة الرئيسية دون التركيز على التفاصيل)
*Example:*
When previewing a news article, skim to understand the overall story before reading in depth.
- Look at titles, headings, and subheadings. (العناوين الرئيسية والفرعية)
- Read the first and last paragraphs carefully. (الفقرتين الأولى والأخيرة)
- Check topic sentences of each paragraph. (الجمل الموضوعية)
- Ignore examples, details, or unfamiliar words unless essential. (تجاهل الأمثلة والتفاصيل غير الضرورية)
Scanning (البحث عن معلومات محددة)
Scanning means moving your eyes quickly to find
specific information
such as names, dates, or figures.
(تحريك العينين بسرعة للعثور على معلومة معينة)
*Example:*
When reading a bus schedule, scan to find your bus number and departure time.
Tip:
Use
skimming
first to get the big picture, then
scanning
to find specific details.

- Know what key word you’re searching for. (الكلمة المفتاحية)
- Let your eyes move quickly over the text without reading everything. (تمرير العين بسرعة دون قراءة كل شيء)
- Pay attention to numbers, capital letters, or italics. (الأرقام، الحروف الكبيرة، أو الخط المائل)
