Unit 10: Functions: Expressing Regret

The "Wish" & "If Only" Rule (قاعدة التمني والندم)

Structure: Past Perfect الماضي التام

Used to express a desire to change a past event. "I wish I had studied harder for the exam." "If only I hadn't spent all my money."

Common Usage استخدام شائع

"I wish I'd taken that job offer." "If only we'd arrived earlier."

Should Have & Regret (استخدام Should Have و Regret)

Criticism نقد / لوم

"You should have listened to my advice." "I shouldn't have eaten so much."

Verb Form صيغة الفعل

"I regret not telling the truth." "She regrets moving to another city."

Formal رسمي

(B2) "I deeply regret my actions." "I'm filled with remorse regarding..."

Wish / If Only + Had + Past Participle Regret + Verb + -ing (Gerund) Should Have + Past Participle (V3)

When rewriting sentences for the exam, remember the Opposite Rule : • Reality: "I didn't go." (Negative) → Regret: "I wish I had gone ." (Affirmative) • Reality: "I shouted ." (Affirmative) → Regret: "I shouldn't have shouted." (Negative) (تذكر قاعدة العكس عند إعادة صياغة جمل الندم)
