Unit 10: Writing Skill: Mastering the Argumentative Essay

Clear Stance (موقف واضح) Counter-Argument (حجة مضادة) Evidence-Based (مدعم بالأدلة)

Step 1: The Thesis Statement (جملة الأطروحة)

Your thesis is your main argument . It should be specific and debatable. Don't just state a fact; state your opinion clearly in the introduction.

Step 2: Address the "Other Side" (مخاطبة الطرف الآخر)

A high-level essay (B2) must include a Counter-argument . Acknowledge what people who disagree might say, then prove why they are wrong (Refutation). Argumentative Essay Structure (هيكل المقال الحجاجي) 1. Introduction & Thesis (المقدمة والأطروحة) "While some argue that festivals are a waste of resources, I strongly believe they are essential for cultural preservation and community mental health." 2. Supporting Evidence (الأدلة الداعمة) " Furthermore , statistics show that communities with strong traditions report higher levels of social satisfaction. For instance... " 3. Counter-Argument & Refutation (الحجة المضادة ودحضها) "Admittedly, critics claim that large celebrations cause pollution..." "However, this can be mitigated by implementing green policies, which proves that..." (الرد على الرأي المعارض: الاعتراف بوجهة النظر الأخرى ثم دحضها.) 4. Conclusion (الخاتمة) "In conclusion, the benefits of celebrations far outweigh the costs. It is therefore vital to..." Persuasive Connectors (أدوات الربط الإقناعية)

Step 2: Address the "Other Side" (مخاطبة الطرف الآخر)

  • Adding Points
  • Contrast
  • Concession

Column 2

  • "Moreover," / "In addition," / "Not only... but also"
  • "On the other hand," / "Conversely," / "Nonetheless,"
  • "It is true that," / "Despite the fact that,"

Column 3

  • إضافة نقاط إضافية

  • التسليم بوجة نظر (التنازل)

Avoid "I think" (تجنب "أعتقد")

For a more professional B2-level tone, avoid using "I think" or "In my opinion" too often. *Instead, use:* " It is widely argued that... " (يُجادَل على نطاق واسع بأن...) " The evidence suggests that... " (تشير الأدلة إلى أن...) " It is undeniable that... " (مما لا يمكن إنكاره أن...)
