Unit 6: Grammar: Phrasal Verbs

Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb and a particle that create a new meaning. They are essential for the 2nd Baccalaureate National Exam. (الأفعال المركبة تتكون من فعل وأداة وتعطي معنى جديداً)

Separable (قابل للانفصال)

The object can go in the middle. (يمكن وضع المفعول في الوسط) *"Turn the TV on" / "Turn on the TV."*

Inseparable (غير قابل للانفصال)

The object must come after the particle. (يجب أن يأتي المفعول بعد الأداة) *"I look after my brother."*

Separable Phrasal Verbs (Can be split) (قابلة للفصل)

Look up يبحث عن Search for info (dictionary/web). Put off يؤجل Postpone or delay an event. Set up يؤسس / ينشئ Start a business or project. Turn down يرفض Reject an offer or invitation. Fill in يملأ Complete a form or application. Hand in يسلم Submit an assignment or paper. Take off يقلع / ينزع Plane leaves / Remove clothes. Bring about يسبب To cause something to happen.

Inseparable Phrasal Verbs (Stay together) (لا تنفصل)

Look after يعتني بـ Take care of someone/something. Look forward to يتطلع إلى To be excited about the future. Put up with يتحمل Tolerate a difficult person/situation. Take after يشبه Resemble a family member. Give up يستسلم Stop trying or stop a habit. Drop out ينقطـــع Leave school before finishing. Break down يتعطل Stop functioning (machines/cars). Break out يندلع Start suddenly (war/fire). Get over يتجاوز Recover from illness/bad news. Get along with ينسجم مع Have a good relationship. Go on يستمر To continue doing something. Run out of ينفذ من Have no more left (water/fuel). Carry out ينجز Perform a task or experiment. Find out يكتشف Discover information. Stand for يرمز إلى Represent (initials or ideas).

Exam Success Tip (نصيحة للنجاح في الامتحان)

In the National Exam, look for context keywords . If the sentence mentions a dictionary , use Look up . If it mentions a plane , use Take off . If it mentions school/homework , use Hand in or Drop out . (ابحث عن الكلمات المفتاحية في السياق لتحديد الفعل المناسب)
