Unit 6: Grammar: Phrasal Verbs
Phrasal verbs are combinations of a
verb
and a
particle
that create a new meaning. They are essential for the 2nd Baccalaureate National Exam.
(الأفعال المركبة تتكون من فعل وأداة وتعطي معنى جديداً)
Separable (قابل للانفصال)
The object can go in the middle.
(يمكن وضع المفعول في الوسط)
*"Turn the TV on" / "Turn on the TV."*
Inseparable (غير قابل للانفصال)
The object must come after the particle.
(يجب أن يأتي المفعول بعد الأداة)
*"I look after my brother."*
Separable Phrasal Verbs (Can be split) (قابلة للفصل)

Search for info (dictionary/web).
Put off
يؤجل
Postpone or delay an event.
Set up
يؤسس / ينشئ
Start a business or project.
Turn down
يرفض
Reject an offer or invitation.
Fill in

Complete a form or application.
Hand in

Submit an assignment or paper.
Take off
يقلع / ينزع
Plane leaves / Remove clothes.
Bring about
يسبب
To cause something to happen.

Take care of someone/something.
Look forward to

To be excited about the future.
Put up with
يتحمل
Tolerate a difficult person/situation.
Take after

Resemble a family member.
Give up

Stop trying or stop a habit.
Drop out

Leave school before finishing.
Break down

Stop functioning (machines/cars).
Break out

Start suddenly (war/fire).
Get over

Recover from illness/bad news.
