Unit 8: Reading Skill: Evaluating Ideas (Critical Reading)

Critical reading goes beyond understanding. At the B2-C1 level , you must evaluate the text: is the author’s argument about a celebration logical, biased, or supported by strong evidence? (القراءة النقدية تتجاوز الفهم إلى تقييم منطقية الحجج وتحيزها ومدى دعمها بالأدلة)

Step 1: Detect Bias (كشف التحيز)

Does the author only show the positive side of a festival? If they ignore negative impacts (like waste or noise), they may have a one-sided bias .

Step 2: Assess Evidence (تقييم الأدلة)

Check if claims are substantiated . Does the author use facts and statistics, or just anecdotal stories (personal experiences)? Critical Evaluation Criteria (معايير التقييم النقدي)

  • Validity
  • Reliability
  • Perspective
  • Purpose

Column 2

  • Is the argument logical? (e.g., "The festival is good because it's old" is a weak logical claim).
  • Are the sources trustworthy? (e.g., a government report vs. a social media post).
  • Does the author acknowledge counter-arguments (opposing views)?
  • Is the intent to persuade you to attend, or to critique the tradition?

The "Generalization Trap" (فخ التعميم)

Be careful with words like "always," "never," or "everyone." *Example:* "Everyone agrees that fireworks are the best part of the holiday." A critical reader knows this is a sweeping generalization —some people may dislike the noise or environmental impact. (احذر من كلمات التعميم المطلقة؛ القارئ الناقد يدرك أنها نادراً ما تكون دقيقة)
