Unit 9: Grammar: Third Conditional & Past Regrets

Both structures are used to talk about the imaginary past . We use them to describe situations that didn't happen and the regrets we have about them. (تُستخدم كلتا البنى للتحدث عن الماضي الخيالي والمواقف التي لم تحدث والندم عليها)

The "Hypothetical Past". *"If I had known, I would have helped."*

Expressing regret about the past. *"I wish I hadn't lost my phone."*

If + Past Perfect (had + V3) Would have + Past Participle (V3) Positive Outcome: "If she had invited me, I would have gone to the party." (Reality: She didn't invite me, so I didn't go.) Negative Outcome: "If I hadn't forgotten my keys, I wouldn't have been locked out." (Reality: I forgot them and I was locked out.)

To express regret about a past situation, we use "I wish" or "If only" with the Past Perfect : (للتعبير عن الندم نستخدم I wish أو If only مع الماضي التام)

Could have + V3 (القدرة في الماضي) Ability in the past. "If I'd had the money, I could have bought it." Might have + V3 (احتمالية في الماضي) Possibility in the past. "If you'd asked, he might have helped ." Should have + V3 (نقد / واجب) Criticism/Duty. "You should have told me the truth."

When rewriting sentences into the Third Conditional or Wishes , always use the opposite of the reality: • Reality is Affirmative (+) Grammar must be Negative (-) • Reality is Negative (-) Grammar must be Affirmative (+) *Example: "He didn't drive slowly, so he crashed." "If he had driven slowly, he wouldn't have crashed."* (عند إعادة الصياغة، اقلب الجملة من مثبت إلى منفي والعكس)
