Grammar: Past Simple

This tense is used for actions and states that were completed in the past.

Past Simple of "to be"

Use: To describe a state, identity, or location in the past.
  • Form: Subject + was/were.
  • Example: I was happy to see them.
  • Example: They weren't at home yesterday.

Past Simple (All other verbs)

Use: Completed actions at a specific time in the past.
  • Positive: Subject + past verb (V2, often ending in -ed).
  • Negative: Subject + did + not + base verb.
  • Question: Did + subject + base verb?

Timeline: A single, completed action in the past.

Past ---x--- NOW ----- Future

Examples:

  • We visited our grandparents last week.
  • She didn't finish her homework.
  • Did you buy the tickets?
