Grammar: Past Perfect

Use: An action that was completed before another action in the past. It's known as the "past of the past."

Form: had + Past Participle (V3)

  • Positive: Subject + had + past participle (V3).
  • Negative: Subject + had + not + past participle (V3).
  • Question: Had + subject + past participle (V3)?

Timeline: An action (x) happened before a later past action (y).

Past --x--y-- NOW ----- Future

Examples:

  • By the time we arrived, the train had already left.
  • She hadn't studied French before she moved to Paris.
  • Had you finished the report before the meeting started?
