Grammar: Phrasal Verbs
A phrasal verb is a combination of a
verb + preposition/adverb
that creates a new meaning different from the original verb.
Transitive
Takes an object.
Intransitive
Does not take an object.
Separable
Object can go in the middle.
Inseparable
Object must go after.

| turn on/off | Start/stop a machine | Transitive, Separable | Please turn the light on. |
| look up | Find information | Transitive, Separable | I need to look up this word. / I'll look it up. |
| give up | Quit | Transitive, Separable | She gave up smoking. / She gave it up. |
| get up | Rise from bed | Intransitive | I get up at 7 AM every day. |
| look after | Take care of | Transitive, Inseparable | Can you look after my cat? |
| run out of | Use all of something | Transitive, Inseparable | We have run out of milk. |
| come across | Find by chance | Transitive, Inseparable | I came across an old photo. |
| break down | Stop functioning | Intransitive | My car broke down. |
