Grammar: Adverbs of Manner
Use:
To describe
how
an action is performed. They modify verbs.
Formation & Spelling
- Usually formed by adding -ly to an adjective (slow → slowly, beautiful → beautifully).
- Adjective ends in -y → change to -ily (happy → happily).
- Adjective ends in -le → drop -e and add -y (terrible → terribly).
Irregular Adverbs
Some adverbs do not follow the -ly rule.
- good → well
- fast → fast
- hard → hard
Placement & Examples
They usually go after the main verb or after the object.
- He drives carefully.
- She sings beautifully.
- He did the exam well. (NOT "good")
